The truth about the Texas floods
The deadly Texas floods were not a “freak event”, but a political failure.
A video from Texas has gone viral recently.
It’s a time lapse that shows a bridge being completely swallowed by floodwaters in the span just a few minutes.
What it captures is how deadly and extreme the recent floods in Texas have been.
So far, over 80 people have been killed, including dozens of children who were tragically swept away while attending a summer camp.
US officials, including Trump, have described this as a “100-year catastrophe” - suggesting it’s a rare, once-in-a-generation event.
But the problem is - they’re wrong.
Because while this flood was unusually severe, the cause behind it is clear: climate change.
Let’s be clear - flooding isn’t rare in Texas. Its natural geography and climate already make it vulnerable.
But what is changing is the intensity and frequency of these floods. And that’s down to human-driven climate change.
As the planet heats up, the atmosphere holds more moisture. That means heavier rainfall, and more violent flash floods.
We’ve seen this pattern in recent years: major floods in 2015, 2017, 2024, and now again in 2025.
And it’s not just Texas. These kinds of extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and more destructive across the globe.
The evidence is overwhelming - yet governments still aren’t doing enough.
And in some cases - like in the US, ironically - we’re seeing the opposite. The Trump administration has rolled back climate regulations and pushed policies that actively make the crisis worse.
And instead of even acknowledging the problem, leaders try to frame it as an unpredictable tragedy no one could’ve seen coming. Or worse, they say it’s disrespectful to "politicise" the disaster.
But how we treat the climate is inherently political.
If we want to save lives, and prevent more people from becoming victims, we need to face the root cause.
Climate denial has consequences. And this flood is one of them.
